The Green Lake in Styria (Grüner See) is located near the village of Tragöß and is surrounded by dense forests and the impressive peaks of the Hochschwab mountains (this is a different lake from the Green Lake in Salzburg). The lake gets its name from the greenish color of its water. The lake’s water is incredibly clear and drains into it after the snow melts from the nearby mountain peaks. The water temperature is around 10 degrees Celsius, so it is not recommended to try to enter the lake unless you are prepared to freeze (besides, there is a ban on entering the water anyway).
During the winter, the water level drops significantly, reaching a height of only one or two meters. During this period, the area surrounding the lake serves as a nature park with paths, benches, and trees for the benefit of the village residents.
In the spring, when the snow begins to melt, the water drains into the Green Lake and the water level rises dramatically to around 12 meters. As a result, the park is completely flooded and sinks deep into the lake. Many divers used to come to the lake to “hike” in the underwater park. One of the most famous pictures from this area is of a diver sitting on a park bench at the bottom of the lake. Today, authorities completely forbid entering the water.
The best time to visit the lake is from mid-May to the end of June. During this time the lake is completely full and at its most impressive. It is undoubtedly beautiful from July to September as well, but its water level gradually decreases.
Access to the lake is very convenient and there is parking right next to it.
