The Alpine Road of the Ötztal Valley was paved at an altitude of 2,474 meters, and along it, there are several stops with interesting activities. This road also earns the name “secret passage” because drivers do not heavily use it, as several alternative, less narrow, and less dangerous routes exist in the area. The highest point along this road is at an altitude of 2,509 meters above sea level.
The plan to pave the alpine road appeared as early as the end of the 19th century, but construction work only began in the mid-20th century. The construction of the route took four consecutive years, and the road was opened for traffic in 1959. The section of the road in Austria mainly served to develop tourism.
The Alpine Road is open to visitors from about mid-June until mid-October (depending on snow conditions, of course), every day from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. You must pay a toll on the Austrian side to drive the road.
