Nestled between the dramatic Northern Limestone Alps, the city of Salzburg is undoubtedly one of the most enchanting classical music destinations in Central Europe. Beyond its fairy-tale baroque spires, manicured palace estates, and postcard-perfect mountain scenery, Salzburg carries a rich cultural legacy. As the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the beloved cinematic setting for The Sound of Music, Salzburg has shaped centuries of European performing arts. If you are planning a visit to Salzburg, you simply cannot miss the chance to hear Mozart’s most celebrated chamber works performed live in the city’s most breathtaking historic venue: the iconic Mirabell Palace (Schloss Mirabell).
The Marble Hall at Mirabell Palace (Marmorsaal)
Commissioned in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, historic Mirabell Palace sits in the very heart of Salzburg’s UNESCO-listed heritage district. The palace and its world-famous geometric gardens are celebrated worldwide – not only as one of the most romantic wedding venues anywhere on earth, but also as the recognizable filming ground where Maria and the von Trapp children sang “Do-Re-Mi” in The Sound of Music.
Inside the palace lies the magnificent Marble Hall (Marmorsaal), a two-story baroque masterpiece adorned with genuine stucco marble, gold leaf gilding, and historic ceiling frescoes. Acclaimed as one of the most beautiful and acoustically pristine concert chambers in the world, this is the very hall where Leopold Mozart and his child prodigies Wolfgang Amadeus and Nannerl performed command concerts for Salzburg’s reigning Prince-Archbishops.

Classical Concerts in the Marble Hall
Living up to its prestige as an international musical capital, the Marble Hall hosts classical chamber concerts almost every evening, performed by world-class soloists and renowned chamber ensembles. Throughout the concert season, distinguished rotating ensembles grace the stage, including:
- Mozart Consort Salzburg • Amadeus Consort Salzburg
- Ensemble 1756 (performing on authentic period instruments)
- Salzburger Solisten • Ensemble Mirabell • Ensemble Altenau
- Constanze Quartet • Beija-Flor String Quartet • Erato Ensemble
While every concert program prominently features the timeless works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (including famous divertimenti, violin sonatas, and string quartets), the repertoire also weaves in beloved masterpieces by other classical titans, such as Antonio Vivaldi (including movements from The Four Seasons), Ludwig van Beethoven, Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
The concerts start promptly at 8:00 PM and last approximately 90 to 100 minutes, including a brief intermission. Check the Official Concert Schedule for up-to-date daily programs and artist lineups.
