The Green Lake (Grünsee) and the White Lake (Weißsee) are a few minutes’ cable car ride from each other. These two lakes are surrounded by the high peaks of the Alps and are particularly loved by hikers who want to enjoy a spectacular panoramic view and especially beautiful nature. Among the high peaks, you can see large glaciers and, of course, various animals in their natural habitat.
The White Lake and the Green Lake – amazing views of alpine nature:
To get to the White Lake and the Green Lake, you have to drive through one of the beautiful valleys of the nature reserve, the Stubachtal valley. The panoramic road starts from the village of Uttendorf and continues for 17 kilometers until you reach the lower cable car station, Enzingerboden (there is no special fee for driving on this road).
From there, you go up by cable car easily and within a few minutes, you reach the heart of the mountains.
The middle station is at an altitude of 1,740 meters above sea level. At this station is the Green Lake, which has a power station of the Austrian railway company ÖBB. The sight of the clear lake among the mountain peaks is very impressive, but in fact, the upper station is the highlight of the visit! At the top of the cable car, at an altitude of 2,315 meters, is the White Lake, and next to it is the Rudolfshütte hotel (click for more information about the hotel on the Booking website).
Around the lake, there are marked hiking trails in the heart of nature, right between the high mountain peaks. You won’t want to miss the views from there. On clear days, you can see as far as the village of Kals, which is at the foot of the giant Grossglockner mountain.
With a little luck, you can also see animals like marmots and ibexes in their natural habitat. The trails are varied and suitable for all levels of hikers.
Please note: The White Lake and the Green Lake are part of the nature reserve. It is not possible to swim in these lakes, and not only because the water temperature is extremely low.
