The seventh district is considered a very desirable place among young Viennese and is a much-loved neighborhood for students, intellectuals, and artists. The neighborhood is also full of foreigners from all over the world. The location of this district is very good; it borders the 1st district and the popular 8th district. You can find good hotels in this district and convenient access to the city’s main attractions. The Mariahilfer Strasse shopping street is right on the border between this district and the 6th district.

Recommended Attractions in the Seventh District

1. Museumsquartier (MQ)

The Museumsquartier is one of the central complexes in Vienna for modern art. The complex includes popular museums such as the Mumok Museum of modern art, the Leopold Museum, and the Zoom Children’s Museum. Especially on summer days, the plaza between the museums becomes bustling with life. In the Museumsquartier plaza, you can enjoy dance, music, and theater performances, art installations, photography and architecture exhibits, lectures, children’s activities, and more. Surrounding the museums are a variety of cafes and restaurants. It’s a nice place to walk around, even if you don’t plan on entering the museums or sitting in the restaurants. You can read our detailed article for more information on all the museums and activities in the MuseumsQuartier.

2. Volkstheater (People’s Theatre)

The Volkstheater of Vienna is located on the street parallel to the Ringstrasse, near the Museumsquartier and the Mariahilfer Strasse shopping street. It can be reached with a short walk from the Hofburg Palace or the Parliament building. The square where the theater is located is named Arthur-Schnitzler-Platz.

Although this theater was secondary to the Habsburg’s court theater (Burgtheater), it nowadays plays an important role in Vienna’s world of art and culture. The theater building is ancient, impressively beautiful, and it hosts many important events for the city, such as the TEDxVienna event or the International Dance Festival. The theater hall includes 832 seats, making it one of the largest theaters in German-speaking countries. Read more up-to-date information about the Volkstheater.

3. Spittelberg’s Biedermeier Charm

Step away from the grid of modern blocks and you are instantly transported back in time. The Spittelberg quarter lies right between Neubaugasse and the MuseumsQuartier. It is a maze of narrow, winding cobblestone alleys lined with pastel-colored Biedermeier townhouses. Historically a bit of a rebellious, bohemian fringe area, today it is a haven for artisan workshops, small galleries, and romantic hidden courtyards like the Amerlingbeisl, where ivy-covered walls frame a great outdoor seating area.

If you visit in winter, Spittelberg undergoes a complete transformation. It hosts one of Vienna’s most atmospheric Christmas markets, winding right through the historic alleyways. Instead of massive commercial stalls, local artists set up booths selling handmade crafts, and the scent of roasted chestnuts and spiced punch fills the narrow streets, making it a cozy, local alternative to the massive markets in front of the city hall.

4. St. Ulrichsplatz – The Village Square Feel

Just a few blocks north of the bustling shopping streets, St. Ulrichsplatz feels like a quiet village magically dropped into the middle of the city. Dominated by the historic St. Ulrich Church, this picturesque square is centered around Ulrich, one of the district’s most beloved all-day cafés. With its sun-drenched outdoor seating, it’s the ultimate spot to sip a flat white, watch local creatives walk by, and soak in the unhurried neighborhood atmosphere.

5. Siebensterngasse & Westbahnstraße: The Independent Shopping Spine

If fast fashion isn’t your thing, skip the main commercial drags and head straight to parallel arteries like Siebensterngasse and Westbahnstraße. This is where Neubau earns its reputation as Vienna’s design district.

From quirky local fashion labels to sustainable concept stores, every storefront here tells a story of independent craftsmanship.

6. 7sternbräu – Local Brewing Tradition

Just a few steps off the main paths on Siebensterngasse, 7sternbräu proves that the 7th district isn’t just about hipster cocktail bars and trendy bistros. This traditional, spacious brewpub has been crafting its own beers, including a smooth hemp beer and seasonal specialties, for decades. Head past the rustic wooden interior into their hidden, tree-shaded courtyard beer garden for an authentic, unpretentious taste of Vienna.

7. Kirchengasse & Stiftgasse’s Natural Wine Scene

In recent years, the stretch along Kirchengasse and Stiftgasse has quietly transformed into the epicenter of Vienna’s natural wine movement. Minimalist interiors, handwritten chalk menus, and passionate vintners pouring organic, skin-contact wines define the vibe here. It’s unpretentious, deeply social, and the absolute best place to spend a warm evening mingling with local architects, designers, and writers.
