Bärenschützklamm Gorge | A Stunning Nature Trail Near Graz

In the nature reserve of the Pernegg an der Mur region, located between Bruck an der Mur and Graz, lies a magnificent nature trail inside a huge natural canyon known as the Bärenschützklamm. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and longest natural canyons in Austria, attracting hikers from all over the world. To this day, it is unclear why the canyon is called "bear's protection," and there are no urban legends surrounding this peculiar name.

The waters of the Mixnitzbach stream flow powerfully through the Bärenschützklamm, and thanks to them, this natural wonder was formed over tens of thousands of years. The water persistently carved its way through the high mountains, creating an impressive passage between giant stone walls that rise up to 300 meters high. At the heart of the canyon, there is a 50-meter waterfall. All along the canyon, you’ll find diverse plants typical of this region.

The Hiking Trail in the Bärenschützklamm

The trail begins at the restaurant near the village of Mixnitz, called Gasthof zum Bärenschütz. After parking your car, follow the marked path through the forest. The walk from the parking lot to the canyon entrance takes about an hour and involves a moderate ascent. Upon entering the canyon, there is a well-maintained wooden path with approximately 164 ladders and bridges. The walk inside the canyon takes about an hour and is a constant ascent, which can be steep in some parts. Along the canyon trail, there are signs with explanations and information about the vegetation growing on the wayside.

After exiting the canyon, you continue for about 20 minutes to a restaurant called Gasthaus zum Guten Hirten. Here, you can sit down, rest, and enjoy a hot meal and a cold beer. From there, continue along the forest path called Prügelweg. This path eventually leads back to the canyon entrance.

Opening Times: From May 1st to October 31st, every day from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Please note: The trail is not accessible with a stroller. A baby carrier is possible. Suitable for children aged 8 and up who have no difficulty with extensive walking.
