Clam Castle in Upper Austria

On the way between Vienna and Linz, right on the border between the state of Lower Austria and the state of Upper Austria, lies an ancient castle on a small hill overlooking the entire region. This castle is called Burg Clam, and it is the residence of the noble Clam family to this day. In the castle grounds, huge concerts with famous bands from around the world and thousands of participants are held during the summer months.

The Story of Clam Castle

The ancient Clam Castle was established in 1149 by Duke Otto von Machland, who was then the ruler of the entire Upper Austria region. After his death, the castle passed several times between different noble families but was preserved in its original form. In the 15th century, the castle passed into the hands of the noble Clam family.

During the Thirty Years’ War, the family maintained a small army to defend the castle. Although the castle was never conquered, the many wars that took place in the area left it in a very dilapidated state.

After the war subsided, the castle underwent extensive renovation, and new wings were added, as well as a church and stables. During the World Wars, the castle remained unscathed, and to this day, the members of the Clam family are its owners.

On the castle grounds, there is a large concert stage where music performances with thousands of participants are held during the summer months.

Guided Tour of the Castle

A visit to the castle is possible as part of a guided tour. The tour begins in the castle courtyard and continues from there through the pharmacy rooms, the Gothic chapel, and the armory. Afterward, you visit the living quarters of the Clam family members. The living quarters are beautifully designed and contain preserved and impressive furniture from the 18th century. The castle’s dining room is the highlight of the tour, with a large dining area and exceptionally decorated walls.

On the tour, you will learn about the history of the castle and the Clam family, who have lived in it for the last 550 years.

The tour duration is about 45 minutes.

Meet the Count

Another and different option to visit the castle is through a private tour with Count Carl Philip Clam, the owner of the castle. On the tour, the Count will present the castle from his point of view, and you will also be able to visit his private art room. The duration of this tour is about 70 minutes.

The minimum number of participants is 10, and the price is €25 per participant.

Another option is to enjoy lunch at the castle, including a private guided tour with the Count. The meal is for 15 participants or more, and the price is €65 per participant.

If you really want to feel like counts, you can have a magnificent 3-course dinner in the castle’s ancient dining room. The meal is for 15 participants or more, and the price is €150 per participant (depending on the chosen menu). After the meal, there will be a night tour with the Count.
