Mount Grünberg (the “Green Mountain”) rises to an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters above sea level right above the scenic lakeside town of Gmunden on Lake Traunsee. In addition to pristine nature trails, picturesque alpine pastures, and adventure playgrounds, Mount Grünberg is home to two of the most popular family-friendly attractions in Upper Austria: the breathtaking Treetop Walk (Baumwipfelpfad Salzkammergut) and the exhilarating Grünberg-Flitzer Alpine Coaster.
To reach the mountain summit, visitors can take the panoramic Grünberg cable car directly from the outskirts of Gmunden or hike up along scenic alpine forest trails.
1. The Treetop Walk (Baumwipfelpfad Salzkammergut)
Situated near the summit plateau of Mount Grünberg above Lake Traunsee’s eastern shoreline, the Baumwipfelpfad Salzkammergut is an extraordinary elevated wooden walkway designed to immerse visitors in the canopy of the forest. The gentle trail winds through treetops, featuring fun interactive activity stations, educational learning displays, and resting platforms for all ages.
The highlight of the walk is a monumental 39-meter-high wooden observation tower. Climbing the gradual spiral ramp rewards visitors with a stunning 360-degree panoramic vista across Lake Traunsee, the imposing Traunstein peak, and the surrounding Salzkammergut mountain range. At the center of the tower is a thrilling 75-meter tunnel slide (available for an extra small fee). The entire wooden walkway and observation ramp are barrier-free and fully accessible for wheelchairs and baby strollers.
Note: To reach the Treetop Walk, you take the Grünberg cable car from Gmunden up to the summit station, from which the walkway entrance is just a short stroll.

2. Grünberg-Flitzer Alpine Coaster (Sommerrodelbahn)
Starting right next to the Grünberg mountain station, the Grünberg-Flitzer is an exhilarating summer toboggan run (alpine coaster). The coaster speeds down a 1,400-meter winding track through sweeping bends, tunnels, and dramatic curves down the mountainside.
Riders can independently regulate their speed using intuitive hand brakes, making it thrilling for adrenaline seekers yet perfectly safe and enjoyable for families with children. Children aged 7 and older can ride solo, while children aged 3 to 6 must ride in tandem with an adult. At the end of the run, an automated lift pulls you and your sled comfortably back up to the summit station.
