Schmiding Zoo began its journey in 1982 as a large bird park. Over the years, the zoo expanded until it became one of the most diverse zoos in Austria, with animals from all over the world.
What can you see at the Schmiding Zoo?
The zoo complex is divided into several interesting exhibition areas. There are areas with exotic animals, a large area with aquariums and pools, as well as a historical museum dealing with evolution.
Exotic Animals
During your visit to the zoo, you can be impressed by animals from all corners of the globe. The zoo is home to the formidable gorillas, and this is the only place in Austria where you can watch these apes. Other no-less-interesting animals include rhinos, zebras, antelopes, Siberian tigers, various birds of prey, crocodiles, giraffes, sloths, alpacas, and more.
The Water World
In this enclosed complex, there are large aquariums with fish of all types and species. There are freshwater fish and saltwater fish. You can see sharks, piranhas, seahorses, eels, clownfish, and more. Additionally, there is a 12-meter-long coral reef.
The Evolution Museum
Next to the water world, a new museum dealing with human evolution opened in 2017. The museum interestingly presents the process of human development from the dawn of history to the present day. In addition, the museum displays art and ritual objects from ancient cultures around the world.
Activities for Children
Throughout the zoo, there are 3 fun playgrounds for children with slides, rope bridges, a pirate ship, trampolines, and more. There is also a small petting zoo with furry and sweet animals.
