Möll Valley | 2 Gorges, Glacier & Thrilling Rafting

The Mölltal (Möll Valley) is located in the northern part of Carinthia, not far from the Grossglockner mountain and the High Alpine Road. The valley is surrounded by the impressive peaks of the Hohe Tauern mountains, and the rushing Möll River flows along its length. Scattered throughout the valley are small towns and picturesque villages. The main town in this area is called Flattach, and it is a major attraction for tourists in both winter and summer. Not far from the town, there is an impressive glacier - the Mölltal Glacier (Mölltaler Gletscher), which serves as a ski resort during the winter and an area with many hiking trails in the summer. Read about the best attractions in the Mölltal Valley.

There are four good reasons to visit the Mölltal Valley area: the Raggaschlucht Gorge, the Groppenstein Gorge, whitewater rafting, and skiing. In this article, we will detail the various attractions in the Mölltal Valley in Carinthia.

1. Raggaschlucht Gorge

The narrow gorge is located in the heart of the southern Kreuzeck mountain range. The hiking trail stretches for about two kilometers and passes between giant rock formations and rock walls up to 200 meters high! The walk is well-maintained, and along the way, there are wooden bridges and stairs several meters above the rushing river. Along the trail, you can enjoy the wonderful nature, powerful waterfalls, and immense rock walls.

The walk up the gorge takes about an hour, after which you return the same way. The return walk takes about half an hour.

This is what the trail in the Raggaschlucht Gorge looks like:

2. Groppenstein Gorge

A 7-minute drive from the Raggaschlucht Gorge, there is another, no less impressive, natural gorge. The gorge is about 2.5 kilometers long and includes an ascent on wooden paths, bridges, and stairs. In the heart of the gorge are impressive waterfalls 30 meters high, as well as a spring that originates between the mountain peaks. You can read more about the gorge in the detailed article we have prepared.

3. Whitewater Rafting on the Möll River

The rushing Möll River is an excellent place for an exciting and somewhat extreme rafting experience. In the area of the town of Flattach, the river has the right gradient for rafting, and its flow speed reaches up to 17 km/h. You can participate in rafting by booking and coordinating in advance. The rafting is done under the guidance of a certified instructor and includes all the necessary safety equipment.

Address: Flattach 135, 9831 Flattach

Cost:

  • Adult – from €52
  • Child up to age 14 – from €42

4. Mölltal Glacier – The Ski Resort of the Möll Valley

North of the town of Flattach is a large ski area at an altitude of about 3,100 meters above sea level. This ski area is located on the Mölltal Glacier and is considered the best ski resort in the Möll Valley. About 76 kilometers of varied ski slopes await visitors at the ski resort. The slopes are suitable for beginners and experienced skiers. The ski season usually starts as early as the beginning of October. Even in the summer months, it is possible to ski on several snow-covered slopes.

The ascent to the glacier is initially done in a funicular inside the mountain, and then you continue by cable car to the summit. The view from the top is absolutely amazing and includes a variety of lakes on the horizon and, of course, a lot of snow.

Even if you don’t ski, you can go up to the summit and enjoy a winter experience even in summer! During the summer months, you can do a variety of hiking trails on the mountaintop.

Other Attractions in the Mölltal Valley Area

From the Möll Valley, you can continue north towards the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. The southern entrance to the spectacular road is from the town of Heiligenblut, which is a 40-minute drive from Flattach.

If you have already visited the High Alpine Road, you can continue south towards the beautiful Nockberge Mountains Nature Reserve. On the way, you can stop in the town of Spittal an der Drau, where there is a nice water park called the Drava Valley Pearl, as well as the beautiful and clear Lake Millstatt. Shortly after passing the lake, you reach the town of Feld am See, where there is an impressive Alpine wildlife park.

At the end of a busy day, you can indulge in the large spa and sauna complexes in the town of Bad Kleinkirchheim.
