General Information about the Wagrain-Kleinarl Region

The popular tourist area is located in the St. Johann im Pongau district, south of the city of Salzburg. The entire area is surrounded by impressive mountain ranges, green hills, and lakes. Undoubtedly, this is a wonderful destination for nature and scenery lovers, and of course, fun attractions. The area is great for families as it combines all the best that the Salzburg region has to offer.

As its name suggests, it is located in the areas between two picturesque villages: Wagrain and Kleinarl.

The small and picturesque village of Wagrain is situated on one of the hills in the valley between two impressive rivers: the Salzach River to the west and the Enns River to the east. The village offers a wonderful view of the valley and the surrounding Radstädter Tauern mountains.

The first settlement in this area is mentioned as early as the 13th century AD, when the area was mainly used by miners working in various mines. Today, approximately 3,000 permanent residents live in the village, and many tourists stay there throughout the year.

In winter, the place is considered very popular as it is part of the huge “Ski amadé” ski area, and from there, you can reach the ski slopes within minutes.

Kleinarl Village (Kleinarl)

The small village is located at the other end of the valley, south of Wagrain. It is a small village situated near two beautiful lakes: Jägersee and Tappenkarsee. Due to its location at an altitude of about 1,000 meters above sea level, the view from it is truly impressive.

Similar to Wagrain, this village is also popular with many tourists visiting the area (though slightly less popular among Israelis).

2. Wagraini’s Grafenberg (WAGRAINi’s Grafenberg)

At an altitude of 1,700 meters above sea level, surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery, there is a wonderful complex with about 30 activity stations for parents and children. This area, called Wagraini’s Grafenberg, is considered one of the most popular places in the state of Salzburg for families, where you can spend several hours enjoying fun activities.

This activity complex is easily accessible and also suitable for visits with strollers or wheelchairs. To reach the top of the mountain, you need to take the Grafenbergbahn cable car, which arrives directly at the heart of the complex. At the summit, there’s a small, clear alpine lake called Grafenbergsee. In and around the lake, there are various water games that children will love. They can happily run across the rope bridge over the lake, raft, or simply splash in the water.

In addition, there are other attractions scattered across the mountaintop:

  1. Hiking trails with activity stations – The Busy Bee Trail and the Wonder Trail.
  2. Rope course.
  3. Marmot observation station.

3. Additional Attractions – Footgolf, Paragliding, Fishing, and Cycling

If the exciting activity stations at Wagraini’s Grafenberg left you wanting more, you can enjoy 3 additional activities in the area: footgolf, paragliding from the mountain peak, and fishing.

Footgolf Complex

The unusual golf complex opened in recent years and is located near the lower cable car station called “Rote 8er”. The game is suitable for all ages, and during the game, you try to get the soccer ball into the different holes with as few kicks as possible. The rules of the game are identical to golf, and along the course, there are 18 different holes. It’s worth planning between one and a half to two hours for this game.

Paragliding

The Wagrain-Kleinarl area is considered the best for paragliding. You can try this special experience without prior knowledge or much preparation (15 minutes of preparation before takeoff). The activity is performed while you are attached to a certified paragliding instructor who will navigate the paraglider from the moment you take off until landing.

Fishing

If you’ve ever imagined yourself relaxing in nature, sipping a cold beer, enjoying the warm sun, and trying your hand at fishing, the Wagrain-Kleinarl complex can make your dream come true.

Two clear rivers rich in fish flow through the valley: the Wagrainer Ache and the Kleinarler Ache. You can sit along the river and try your luck at fishing.

In Austria, a special permit is required if you plan to fish. You need to purchase a daily fishing card. A fishing card for the Kleinarler Ache river can be purchased at Clubhotel Robinson for 35 Euro. A fishing card for the Wagrainer Ache river can be purchased at the Wagrain Tourist Information Center for 29 Euro.

Another option is to buy a fishing card for the nearby Tappenkar Lake for 13 Euro. This card can be purchased at Gasthaus Jägersee.

Cycling

The Wagrain-Kleinarl area has a huge number of cycling trails. Whether on a paved road or deep in the terrain, you’ll find diverse trails for all levels. Adrenaline junkies can enjoy the local bike park with some particularly thrilling downhill trails.

Off-road cyclists have plenty of options. No less than 19 organized and marked off-road cycling trails are located in this area. Even if you’re not a great cyclist but still want to enjoy the experience, you can rent electric bicycles and leisurely tour the many cycling paths.

4. Climbing World (Kletter-Welt)

Climbing and nature enthusiasts can enjoy several particularly sporty and exciting attractions. It’s worth considering that these places are suitable for those who are not afraid of heights.

Kleinarl Ropes Park

This ropes park includes about 50 fun sports activities. It has 5 ropes courses of varying difficulty levels. If you’re not afraid of heights, you can try the purple and black courses, next to which there is an 80-meter deep abyss!

In addition to these courses, there is a trail suitable for small children (from age 4 or 110 cm tall), as well as an exciting flying fox.

To reach the ropes park, you will need to walk for about 15 minutes along the hiking trail that passes near the natural Kesselfall canyon, which has several beautiful waterfalls. The hiking trail starts directly from the KLETTER-WELT parking lot.

Kleinarl Flying Fox and Climbing Route

A zip line course passes over the natural Kesselfall Gorge. There are five zip lines crossing the deep abyss of the canyon. Definitely an adrenaline-filled experience! There is an option to combine the zip line with climbing the canyon’s rock walls. There are 3 “Via Ferrata” climbing routes that lead to the starting point of the zip line. The climbing routes are suitable for all levels.

Cable Cars in Summer

During the summer months, two main cable cars operate near Wagrain:

  • Mozart Gondola lift
  • Grafenberg cable car

(There are two more cable cars in nearby towns: Alpendorf Gondola lift & Geisterberg and Starjet Flachau. More information on the official website.)

The Mozart Gondola lift includes a middle station halfway up. This cable car goes from an altitude of about 900 meters above sea level up to 1814 meters above sea level. At the top of the mountain, you can enjoy stunning views, marked hiking trails, and a challenging bike park.

The Grafenberg cable car reaches the Wagraini’s Grafenberg activity area. This is a direct ascent without a middle station, from an altitude of 860 meters up to 1713 meters above sea level.

Both cable cars are enclosed, so you can also take a stroller with you.

Winter Activities

The winter season in the Wagrain-Kleinarl area is no less active than the summer months. As the mountain peaks are covered in white, many travelers arrive to enjoy a variety of sporty and fun winter activities. In Wagrain-Kleinarl, there are exciting attractions for the whole family, which we will detail in this section of the article.

1. Skiing and Snowboarding

The snowy mountain slopes in the Wagrain-Kleinarl area are part of the largest ski area in Austria, known as Ski amadé. The Ski amadé complex includes about 270 cable cars and no less than 760 kilometers of well-groomed slopes. For more information and ski pass costs: Link to ski pass information.

The ski slopes are very diverse and suitable for all levels. Additionally, there is a ski school, equipment rental shops, winter events, and more.

2. Sledding

Another wonderful experience in the snow is, of course, fast snow sledding. Even if you are not an avid skier, you are sure to find great enjoyment in a fast ride down the snowy hills.

There are two main places for snow sledding:

  1. At the top of the hill where the Kleinarler Hütte guesthouse is located, there is an excellent slope for sledding. This slope has a total length of 6.5 kilometers. To reach the spot, you need to walk along a marked trail (this trail takes about two hours).   2. Near the Jausenstation Ennskraxn restaurant, there is a shorter slope especially suitable for families with children. The slope is about 2.5 kilometers long, and you can sled on it with tandem sleds (parent and child). 3. Wagraini’s Winter World (Wagrainis Winter World)

At the middle station of the “Roter 8er” cable car, there is an activity area especially for children. In this place, children can try skiing for the first time on easy and safe slopes. In addition, there are playground facilities, a gnome house where you can draw and color, a children’s festival on Tuesdays, a BBQ party on Thursdays, and more!

Please note: If you don’t want to take the cable car to the complex, you can ascend on foot via a well-maintained and simple path. The path is paved and suitable for strollers or sleds.

4. Horse-drawn Carriage Tour

Wrapped in warm and comfortable blankets, you can enjoy the snowy landscape of the area as you leisurely ride in a horse-drawn carriage. Along the way, you’ll hear interesting stories about the entire area and life there. At the end of the route, when you reach the mountain hut, hot tea or rich punch will be waiting for you.

5. Ice Skating

If ski or sledding aren’t enough, you can spend a few hours at the ice skating rink located near the valley station of the “Mozart Gondola lift” cable car. During the winter months, the skating rink is open daily from 2:00 PM until evening hours. Ice skating equipment can be rented on-site.

Please note: The skating rink closes in mid-March.

6. Snow Biking

If you love fast rides, with the amazing snow bikes, you can enjoy action as it should be. Snow bikes are not motorized, but you can reach a definitely high speed with them. You can rent the bikes at the Intersport Wagrain shop near the “Roter 8er” cable car station or at the Sport Hauser shop in Kleinarl.

7. Snowshoe Hiking Trails

In the Wagrain-Kleinarl area, there are about 20 kilometers of organized trails open to hikers even during the winter months. Whether you want to leisurely walk in the snow, stroll with Nordic walking poles, or go on a hike with special snowshoes, this area has it all.
