Schönbrunn Palace is undoubtedly one of the most impressive landmarks in Vienna. This grand royal complex features manicured gardens, panoramic views of the city center from the Gloriette structure, and, of course, the magnificent palace itself. During the pre-Christmas season, when the days grow short and darkness falls around 4:30 PM, the entire city is adorned with colorful festive lights – and the Schönbrunn Palace grounds are no exception, glowing with a warm holiday atmosphere.
A Spectacular Audiovisual Journey Through Imperial History
Within the palace grounds, a stunning audiovisual exhibition brings its royal story to life. “Imperial Lights” is a spectacular light-and-sound show that presents Vienna’s imperial history in a fresh, immersive way. Scattered throughout the palace park are diverse illuminated installations inspired by the palace and its historic Habsburg residents, blending seamlessly into an extraordinary symphony of light and sound.
Along the illuminated walking trail – which takes between 60 and 90 minutes to explore – you will experience a unique fusion of art, history, and imperial elegance. By the end of the route, you will leave with plenty of magical photos as souvenirs. It is a wonderful experience suitable for all ages, whether you are visiting with family, as a couple, or with friends.
Tips for Your Visit
- Dress Warmly: The “Imperial Lights” show takes place entirely outdoors, so be sure to dress warmly and wear comfortable shoes for a prolonged winter walk outside.
- Make the Most of Your Day: Since it gets dark early in winter, we recommend arriving at the palace during daylight hours (early afternoon). You can tour the palace interior and visit the Schönbrunn Christmas Market first, then wrap up your visit with the light show once night falls.
- Book Tickets in Advance: It is highly recommended to purchase tickets ahead of time, especially if you plan to visit on weekends or during the holidays. Because this light show is relatively new, it is very popular among locals as well.
