Vienna’s Jewish Quarter is centered in a vibrant pocket of the city’s 2nd District (Leopoldstadt), primarily around Taborstraße and the Nestroyplatz area (though smaller Jewish communities can also be found in the 1st and 19th Districts). If you want to stay right in the heart of Jewish life – within walking distance of kosher grocery stores, kosher restaurants and cafés, synagogues, and a kosher hotel – the Taborstraße area is the best place to base yourself.
Taborstraße serves as the main artery of Jewish Vienna. Along this lively street you will find kosher restaurants, the city’s main Chabad House, and a kosher supermarket, while the branching side streets are home to numerous synagogues and Jewish institutions. This is where the majority of Vienna’s Jewish community resides.
For many years, the only option for kosher travelers wanting hotel amenities was Hotel Stefanie at the beginning of Taborstraße. Although not a kosher hotel, it offers guests the option to pre-order a packaged kosher breakfast. However, that kosher breakfast is relatively basic and must be specially requested in advance, separate from the hotel’s standard buffet.
A Dedicated Kosher Hotel in Vienna: Vayalen Boutique Hotel
Fortunately, a dedicated kosher hotel – Vayalen Boutique Hotel – opened on the site of the former Hotel Resonanz. The hotel is located further down Taborstraße, right near the Taborstraße subway station on the purple U2 line.
Following a comprehensive renovation in 2024, Vayalen Boutique Hotel features a fresh, modern, and welcoming design. This intimate Viennese boutique hotel is specifically tailored for kosher and Shabbat-observant travelers. It offers a strictly kosher (Mehadrin) breakfast buffet certified by Rabbi Avi Biderman of Chabad Vienna, Shabbat-friendly rooms, and air conditioning in all rooms for hot summer days. The breakfast spread is generous and varied compared to typical European hotels.
The hotel lobby is warm and inviting, featuring an elegant bar serving drinks and light kosher refreshments. The front desk is staffed 24/7.
Below, we have compiled all the essential information you need to know before booking your stay at Vayalen Boutique Hotel.
What Room Types Are Available & What Do They Include?
Vayalen Boutique Hotel has around 37 rooms spread across two upper floors plus a small ground-floor wing. Room configurations include:
- Single rooms
- Double/Twin rooms
- Triple rooms (3 beds)
- Family/Group rooms with a double bed (or twin beds) plus a sofa bed, accommodating up to 4 guests.
All rooms include an en-suite bathroom with a shower, a mini-fridge, a wardrobe, a TV, a desk, and a chair. Every room is fully air-conditioned!
Are Mechanical Shabbat Keys Available?
Yes. All room doors are equipped with standard mechanical locks, so you can request a physical Shabbat key at the reception desk in exchange for a refundable €10 deposit.
Do Lights Turn On Automatically? Is the Main Entrance Door Electric?
During weekdays, motion sensors operate the lighting in some public hallways of the hotel. On Shabbat and Jewish holidays, all motion sensors are deactivated, so you can enter and exit your room without triggering any lights. Inside the rooms, there are no motion sensors, and most rooms use standard wall switches rather than keycard power slots.
Furthermore, the hotel’s main entrance door is manual (not electric). If the front door is locked late at night, the 24/7 receptionist on duty will gladly open it for you.
What Is Served at the Kosher Breakfast Buffet?
The rich kosher breakfast buffet includes a wide variety of spreads and jams, fresh breads, hard-boiled eggs, shakshuka, fresh vegetables, cheeses, assorted pastries, fruit, juices, cereals, and coffee. Usually, the buffet also features hot items such as vegetarian schnitzels (classic or corn), vegetarian hot dogs, fish fingers, and other daily specials prepared by the chef. It is a hearty, 100% kosher European breakfast.
What Kosher Certification Does the Breakfast Have?
The breakfast is strictly kosher (Mehadrin) under the supervision of Rabbi Avi Biderman of Chabad Vienna.

Are Shabbat Hotplates (Plata) Provided in the Rooms?
No. For fire-safety reasons, using a hotplate inside the rooms is not permitted, and the hotel does not provide hotplates to guests.
