One of the biggest advantages of Abtenau in terms of accommodation is its proximity to countless excellent attractions throughout the Salzburgerland region. At the end of the article, there is a concise list of a variety of great attractions that are a short drive from the village. One of the most popular attractions for families in Salzburgerland is less than a 20-minute drive from Abtenau. This attraction is the impressive hiking trail in the Lammer Gorge.
The Abtenau Mountain Coaster (Sommerrodelbahn Abtenau)
The mountain next to the village of Abtenau is called Karkogel. Although it is not particularly high (only 1,150 meters above sea level), its summit offers wonderful views of the Lammertal valley, and various hiking trails start from it, leading between the mountain peaks.
The main attraction on the Karkogel mountain is the thrilling Abtenau mountain coaster.
When you arrive at the foot of the mountain, you can park your car in the free parking lot and proceed to the cable car station in the valley. After taking the cable car up to the summit of Karkogel mountain, you can descend very quickly back down to the valley using the mountain coaster.
The coaster track starts at an altitude of 1,133 meters and continues for almost two kilometers (1,980 meters). The track is winding and fast, and if you’re not afraid, you can reach a maximum speed of 30 km/h. The ride is safe – there are seat belts and a smart braking system that prevents descending at a speed of more than 30 km/h. Along the track, there are cameras that will photograph you during the exciting moments of the descent. At the end of the track, you can purchase these photos as a souvenir.
Please note: Children up to the age of 6 must be accompanied by an adult. Children from the age of 6 who can sit and reach the brakes with their hands can ride the coaster alone.
A unique experience on this mountain coaster is the possibility of night luge in July and August.
