To the north of Lake Traunsee is the town of Gmunden, where the ancient Schloss Ort castle is located, and to the south of the lake is the town of Ebensee. The lake is surrounded by high mountains. The highest mountain near the lake is called Traunstein, and it rises to a height of almost 1,700 meters above sea level. You can ascend to the mountain peaks and look out over the wonderful scenery of the area. There is also a cable car near the town of Gmunden that reaches the summit of Grünberg mountain, from where there are spectacular views of the entire region.
Around the lake, there are bathing beaches, and you can engage in a variety of water activities such as boating, diving, or wakeboarding. In addition, there are hiking and cycling trails around the lake.
