The mighty Danube River flows through Vienna, creating a prime outdoor haven for recreation, water sports, cycling, and swimming, especially during the warm spring and summer months. The Danube river system in Vienna is divided into distinct water bodies: the Alte Donau (Old Danube), the Neue Donau (New Danube), and the main river, alongside the picturesque Danube Canal (Donaukanal) which flows right past the city center.

Across these waterfronts, locals and travelers enjoy scenic boat rides, open-air lidos, kayak excursions, watersports, and tranquil riverside paths. To help you make the most of sunny days in the Austrian capital, here is our curated guide to the best things to do along Vienna’s Danube River:

Quick Navigation:

  1. Donauinsel (Danube Island): Beaches, Bars & Recreation
  2. Gänsehäufel Lido: Swimming Pools, Sandy Beaches & Ropes Course
  3. Danube River & Canal Cruises (Including Bratislava Day Trip)
  4. Retro Electric Boat Rental & Floating Picnic on the Old Danube
  5. Rent a Private “Floating Island” (Meine Insel)
  6. Guided Danube Kayak Tours
  7. Cycling Along the Danube Canal & Danube Island
  8. Cable Wakeboarding at Wakeboardlift Wien

1. Donauinsel (Danube Island): River Beaches, Beach Bars & Summer Vibes

Donauinsel (Danube Island) is an artificial island built in the 1970s and 80s as part of Vienna’s sophisticated flood protection system. Stretching 21 kilometers in length but only a few hundred meters wide, this lush island has evolved into Vienna’s ultimate warm-weather playground.

The island offers gravel and grassy river beaches, designated barbecue areas, sports facilities, lively riverside cocktail bars at Copa Beach, children’s water playgrounds, rollerblading tracks, and nudist bathing zones (FKK). In late June, it hosts the world-famous Donauinselfest, Europe’s largest free open-air music festival, drawing over 3 million visitors.

2. Gänsehäufel: Iconic Bathing Lido, Pools & Watersports

Many first-time visitors to Vienna never hear about this beloved local treasure. Gänsehäufel is an island lido located in the tranquil waters of the Old Danube (Alte Donau). Spread over 330,000 square meters of lush parkland, it is one of Central Europe’s most famous open-air bathing facilities and the perfect place to spend a hot summer day.

Highlights and facilities at Gänsehäufel include:

  • Direct access to natural river beaches and sunbathing lawns along the Old Danube
  • Large wave pool and multiple Olympic-size swimming basins
  • Dedicated toddler and children’s pools with waterslides
  • Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and boat rentals
  • High-ropes adventure park (Kletterwald) set among mature trees
  • Beach volleyball courts, soccer pitches, and basketball zones
  • Numerous restaurants, traditional snack bars, bakeries, and ice cream parlors

Adult admission is around €9 for a full day, making it exceptional value for a relaxed day in the sun. Check the location on Google Maps.

3. Danube River & Canal Boat Tours

Taking a scenic cruise is one of the most relaxing ways to discover Vienna from the water. Several cruise experiences are available depending on your schedule and interests:

Danube Canal Sightseeing Cruise: Departing from the central Schwedenplatz pier, these boats glide along the historic Danube Canal past colorful street art murals, modern architectural landmarks like the Zaha Hadid building, and the Hundertwasser Spittelau plant. Options range from 1-hour city highlights to comprehensive 3.5-hour grand circular tours connecting the canal with the main Danube River, as well as evening culinary dinner cruises.

Book Vienna Danube Canal Boat Tours online here.

Twin City Liner to Bratislava: For an exciting international day trip, board the high-speed Twin City Liner catamaran right at Schwedenplatz. Cruising down the Danube at up to 70 km/h, it reaches the historic center of Bratislava, Slovakia, in just 75 minutes. Learn more in our guide to cruising from Vienna along the Danube.

Copa Cruise Electric Ferry: From July through the end of September, the eco-friendly “Copa Cruise” electric passenger ferry operates along the northern stretch of the New Danube. Departing from Copa Beach (near U-Bahn station U1 Donauinsel), it makes four stops along Danube Island. The full scenic loop takes approximately 40 minutes and costs just €3 for adults and €1 for children. Find more information on the City of Vienna official website.

4. Retro Electric Boat Rental & Picnic on the Old Danube

On the tranquil, non-flowing waters of the Alte Donau (Old Danube), you can enjoy an unforgettable romantic outing or family gathering. Rent a charming, vintage-styled retro electric boat or pedal boat and take your time gliding across the calm water surrounded by weeping willows and charming wooden boathouses.

Boats can be booked with delicious picnic baskets and chilled refreshments for couples or small groups of up to 5 people. Enjoy an exclusive 10% discount when booking using promo coupon code AU10.

5. Rent a Private “Floating Island” (Meine Insel)

Looking for a truly unique summer experience? You can rent your own private motorized “floating island” and pilot it across the waters of the Old Danube into the sunset. Equipped with comfortable lounge seating, sunshades, and swim ladders, these electric platforms accommodate up to 8 passengers.

You can also arrange catered dinner platters or brunch baskets to enjoy on board. Rates start from around €75 per hour. Find details and reservations on Meine Insel’s official booking platform.

6. Guided Danube Kayak Tours

Paddling a kayak gives you an intimate, active perspective on Vienna’s scenic waterways and green marshlands. Guided small-group tours (capped at 8 participants) navigate the tranquil channels of the Old and New Danube, accompanied by a friendly local English-speaking guide.

Tours include quality single or tandem kayaks, paddles, life vests, waterproof dry bags, and safety briefings suitable for beginners and seasoned paddlers alike.

7. Cycling Along the Danube Canal & Danube Island

Sunny days in Vienna are made for two wheels. The paved paths lining the Danube Canal offer an easy, flat ride from central Vienna northwards through vibrant street art zones and lively waterside bars. Continuing north, the trail seamlessly connects to Danube Island.

Because motor vehicles are strictly banned on Danube Island, cyclists can ride uninterrupted along 21 kilometers of paved riverside trails all the way to the southern tip overlooking the Vienna airport approach. You can easily rent bikes from central shops like Vienna Explorer or via the city’s WienMobil Rad bike-share stations. Don’t forget your swimwear – there are dozens of idyllic spots to pause for a picnic and cool off in the water along the way.

Read more in our guide to exploring Vienna’s Danube Canal.

8. Cable Wakeboarding & Waterskiing at Wakeboardlift Wien

For adrenaline seekers, Vienna offers an extraordinary urban watersports venue: Wakeboardlift Wien, located directly on the Neue Donau (New Danube). Powered by an overhead cable tow system, this professional facility welcomes beginner riders and experienced wakeboarders alike.

How to get there: Take subway line U2 to the Donaustadtbrücke station. Take the “Donauufer” exit, turn right, and walk just two minutes to the lift facility.
