Tour Description:
During the 19th century, the city of Vienna completely changed its face. Under the rule of the famous Emperor Franz Joseph, the city of Vienna grew and expanded, the walls of the Old City were torn down, and the Jews received full equal rights. Thus, the Jews of Vienna found themselves in key positions and in the upper echelon of society.
On this tour, you will hear the fascinating and moving stories of the families who lived during this period, a time when Jews were given a tremendous opportunity to shape and influence society, yet it was also a period of rising anti-Semitism that lost all restraint in World War II.
The places you will visit include:
- The important private palaces of the Jewish aristocracy in Vienna
- Important institutions that influenced the Jewish community
- The Museum of Art and the story of the “Woman in Gold”
- The Monument Against War and Fascism
- The Ringstrasse (Ring Street) and the buildings along it
- Sigmund Freud’s favorite coffee house
