Although the Leopold Museum only opened in 2001 in Vienna’s Museumsquartier, it is already regarded as one of the most intriguing and beloved museums among admirers of Austrian modern art. The museum’s collection is one of the largest and contains works by artists such as Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, and Richard Gerstl.
The exhibits in the museum are actually the private art collection of art lovers Elisabeth and Dr. Rudolf Leopold and it includes about 5,000 works collected over 50 years. The displayed pictures of artists like Klimt and Schiele interestingly show the gradual transition from the Viennese Secession and Art Nouveau styles to Expressionism.
Egon Schiele Paintings – The Permanent Exhibition
The collection of Schiele’s paintings in the museum is one of the most important and largest in the world. The talented artist passed away at only 28 years old, but he managed to create a very impressive amount of diverse works. The collection includes 42 paintings, 187 original illustrations, sketches, and manuscripts. His most famous works: “Self-portrait with physalis” and “Portrait of Wally Neuzil” are included in the museum’s collection.
