The MUMOK Museum (MUseum MOderner Kunst) is a large modern art museum focusing on art from the 20th and 21st centuries. The museum building is very prominent in the Museum Quarter and is actually a completely black and modern structure. You won’t be able to miss it.
The museum’s collection contains no fewer than 10,000 works of modern art by approximately 1,600 different artists. Among the works displayed in the museum are artworks by famous artists such as Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Yoko Ono, and other talented artists.
The museum’s collections are mainly based on modern art movements such as Pop Art, Photorealism, Fluxus, and Nouveau Réalisme, but also include works from the period of the radical artistic movement known as Viennese Actionism. The museum’s works include paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos, films, furniture, architectural models, and more. Every period there are new displays, so visiting the museum time after time is not boring at all. Read more information about the current displays in the museum.
Pop Art style works include works by Andy Warhol, Swedish artist Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jasper Johns.
The Fluxus and Nouveau Réalisme styles are presented through great works by Daniel Spoerri, Yoko Ono, George Brecht, and Marcel Duchamp.
Viennese Actionism also receives a stage at the museum and is presented through works by Günter Brus, Otto Muehl, Hermann Nitsch, and Rudolf Schwarzkogler.
Besides works from modern and groundbreaking movements, there are also more classical works such as the works of Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee. Since 2011, a cinema has been operating within the museum complex, showing artistic films related to the museum’s displays.
