What’s Special about the Mozart Concert in Vienna?

There is no need to elaborate on the virtuosic talent of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but something that many do not know is that Mozart was one of those who completely changed the world of concerts. In his time, composers and musicians played almost exclusively for the church or the emperor’s court. The concerts were private or for the congregation in churches.

It was Mozart who decided to change the world of concerts, and he was the one who started concerts for a fee for the general public. For a nominal sum, anyone could join a concert and enjoy a variety of his works. To keep the concerts fresh and unique, each concert included a completely different combination of works.

This concept of unique concerts for a fee is the idea on which the Mozart Concert is based. It’s not just the original costumes from the Baroque period, but also the unique combination of works for each concert. Therefore, many come to these concerts again and again, since each time it is a different and enjoyable experience in itself.

What Pieces are Played?

Since the concept is identical to what Mozart himself created in his concerts, each concert is unique and includes a different combination of works. Throughout the concert, about 10 pieces will be played, some more well-known and some less so.

A concert may include works such as:

  1. Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter”
  2. Excerpts from the opera Don Giovanni
  3. A violin concerto
  4. Excerpts from the opera Idomeneo
  5. Excerpts from the opera The Magic Flute
  6. The Blue Danube Waltz by Strauss And many other great works.

When Does the Concert Start and How Long Does It Last?

The concert lasts about two hours and includes an intermission for refreshments. Although it is a longer concert than others offered in the city, it is a real performance, so you won’t notice how quickly time passes. It is definitely worth spending two hours in the evening on your trip for this concert. The concert starts at 8:15 PM and lasts until around 10:15 PM.

In Which Concert Halls Does the Concert Take Place?

The Mozart Concert usually takes place in three concert halls in Vienna. Please note: The concert does not always take place in the famous Golden Hall! There are two other concert halls where it is held.

The Golden Hall (Goldener Saal) – One of the best concert halls in the world!

The Golden Hall is the most famous concert hall in Vienna and in the world. It has existed since the days of Emperor Franz Joseph in the late 19th century. It is characterized by exceptional acoustics and sound quality and a very impressive golden design! This hall is used by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and also as the main stage for the Mozart Concert. The hall is air-conditioned and has 1745 seats.

The Brahms Hall (Brahms Saal)

The Brahms Hall is the smaller hall in the Viennese Music Association building. It was designed by the Austro-Danish architect Theophil von Hansen in the late 19th century. Over the years it has been renovated and restored and today it is definitely impressive in its style. The hall is air-conditioned and has 601 seats.

The State Opera House (Staatsoper)

In 2025, performances will take place at the State Opera only in the last two weeks of August. The Vienna State Opera is undoubtedly a place worth visiting when you come to the city. It is not only impressive in its beauty but also serves as a stage for the best artists there are. The Mozart Concert Orchestra is one of only 3 orchestras allowed to perform in the State Opera House. The hall is large and impressive and has 1709 seats.

When do concerts take place in 2025?

Most of the Mozart Orchestra’s concerts take place from the last week of March to the end of October. In recent years, the range of concerts has been expanded to the Christmas period – in December only. You can see the details of the concerts in the schedule below. Pay attention to the colors in the schedule. Each color symbolizes a different concert hall from the 3 mentioned above:

  • Gold – The Golden Hall
  • Green – The Brahms Hall
  • Blue – The State Opera House

Please note: Although there are many seats in the concert halls, these concerts are almost always sold out. Take this into account and book your concert tickets well in advance.
