Plankenstein Castle (Burg Plankenstein) is located in a village also called Plankenstein, in the nature area in the heart of Austria, not far from Austria’s “Grand Canyon” trail.
The castle is situated on top of a wooded hill and overlooks the entire area. Its structure was built even before the 12th century, but it only appears in writings from 1186. The castle was built by the Plankensteiner family, hence its name. The members of the Plankensteiner family were influential in the area and ruled it for hundreds of years until their power declined and they sold the castle to the Tinti family at the beginning of the 18th century.
The members of the Tinti family were also the owners of Schallaburg Castle and therefore did not reside much at Plankenstein Castle. Until the beginning of the 19th century, it was a preserved and well-kept castle, but the lack of residents eventually led to its neglect. For decades, the castle stood abandoned, and the ravages of nature destroyed it until it became a real ruin.
In 1939, the Tinti family sold most of their property to the noble Nagel-Doornick family. In 1975, the ruined castle was sold to the architect Hans-Peter Trimbacher, who invested millions of shillings in its restoration. After the castle’s restoration, it became a hotel with about 40 guest rooms. To this day, the place serves as a boutique hotel with rooms in a magnificent historical design. Furthermore, medieval-style festivals and events are held on the premises.
