The ancient Hohensalzburg Fortress, perched on a hilltop in the heart of Salzburg, was built in the 11th century by order of Archbishop Gebhard. Over the years, the castle was expanded and numerous fortifications were added, making it extremely well-fortified. Since its construction to this day, the fortress has never fallen to foreign hands in battle, and no invader has ever managed to conquer it.
Today, the fortress serves as a museum showcasing the lives of the archbishops in particular and life in the Middle Ages in general. You can visit the various rooms of the castle and see how its inhabitants lived hundreds of years ago.
You can ascend to the fortress on foot or by using the funicular that runs from the center of the old town directly to the castle.
