Seefeld – General Information

The village of Seefeld in Tyrol is an ancient farming village north of the Inn River, with a population of only about 5,000 residents. This village is a short drive northwest of Innsbruck (17 kilometers) on a plateau between the Wetterstein and Karwendel mountains. Munich International Airport is 140 kilometers from Seefeld.

The village is first mentioned in writings from the 11th century CE, and from the Middle Ages, it became a pilgrimage site for devout Christians. The village was also a trading post on the route between Augsburg in Germany and Venice in Italy. Furthermore, oil shale deposits were found in the village area, which were used by the local medicinal and cosmetics industry.

Tourism in the Seefeld area began to develop even before 1900, and from the 1930s, the village became an internationally renowned winter sports center. Seefeld’s two ski areas are called Gschwandtkopf and Rosshütte. The village is part of the region known as “The Best of the Alps” along with 11 other towns scattered throughout the area.

During the summer months, after the snow melts, there are a variety of hiking trails among the hills and meadows. Some hotels even offer free guided hiking tours on nature trails. You can read more about this in the section on recommended hotels.

The village has several ancient churches, an old cemetery with a memorial to those murdered on the way to the Dachau concentration camp, and the remains of an ancient castle north of the village.
