Between Vienna and Salzburg, in the heart of Upper Austria, lies the wonderful Pyhrn-Priel region. This is a charming nature area with a variety of great attractions for the whole family. One of the best attractions in this area is undoubtedly the Dr. Vogelgesang-Klamm. It is the longest accessible gorge in the state of Upper Austria (and the second longest in all of Austria!) with a well-maintained 1.5-kilometer trail that includes wooden bridges alongside the rushing river. The gorge has been a popular tourist destination for over 110 years (of course, the place is impeccably maintained)!
The walk along the gorge is relatively easy and suitable for young children as well as adults. Keep in mind that there are many stairs along the trail, so it is not suitable for strollers/wheelchairs, etc. It is also important to remember that part of the trail is high above the river, so those with a fear of heights should take this into account.
- The simple circular route takes about 1.5 hours. At the end, you will return to where you started the trail.
- Difficulty level: Easy (just keep in mind that there are many stairs along the way. About 500 stairs to be exact).
- Trail number: 2
- Starting point: 4582 Spital am Pyhrn
Advanced hikers can continue from the gorge towards the “3 Huts Trail,” which takes about 5 hours (this trail passes by the Bosruckhütte, Rohrauerhaus, and Hofalm huts).
Watch some of the views awaiting you along the trail:
Opening Hours:
From May 1st to the end of October. On weekdays from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM and on weekends and holidays from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Entrance Fee:
- Adult – €6.30
- Child (6-15) – €4.20
- Family – If both parents pay the full price, the price for a child’s ticket will be €3.60.
You can buy tickets online or pay directly at the entrance counter (in cash only!).
Getting there by public transport:
First, you need to get to the Windischgarsten Bahnhof train station, and from there, there is bus number 911 that goes to Spital am Pyhrn Hauptplatz. After getting off the bus, you have to walk for about half an hour to the entrance. This is a rather cumbersome way that will take you about 4 hours from Vienna. It is therefore better to arrive by car.
Parking:
There is a parking lot at the entrance to the trail. Keep in mind that the place can be crowded with visitors, so it might take some time to find parking. The earlier you arrive, the better your chances of finding a close parking spot. If necessary, you can also park along the road and then walk for about 10 to 15 minutes to the entrance.
