The Butterfly House is located within the Hofburg Palace complex, inside the greenhouse at the edge of the Royal Gardens. It is a large and impressive Art Nouveau structure spanning approximately 2,000 square meters. Construction of the greenhouse took about five years and was completed in 1901. The greenhouse was originally used by the palace residents for cultivation and as a pleasant retreat for gardening enthusiasts. The Emperor himself used to visit the greenhouse to spend time tending to various plants.
Today, inside this historic greenhouse structure, there is a tropical world of sorts, featuring a variety of beautiful plants, waterfalls, and, of course, butterflies.
Approximately 400 butterflies of various species and sizes fly freely within the Butterfly House. It is a lovely experience for both children and adults, offering something different from the classical scenery of Vienna.
Located just a short walk from this attraction are other significant buildings, such as the Albertina Museum and the State Opera House, making it easy to integrate a visit here as part of a tour of the city’s most important cultural landmarks.
