Similar to the 13th district, the 19th district is also considered prestigious. This district is located in the northern part of the city and is surrounded by wonderful green areas and the Vienna Woods (Wienerwald). The deeper you go into the district, the more the landscape completely changes, becoming green and full of hills covered with vineyards. Some of Vienna’s wealthiest residents live in villas on these hills, right among the vineyards. This is one of the things that makes Vienna so special—the wonderful combination of nature and an urban settlement.
Recommended Attractions in the Nineteenth District
1. The Grinzing Neighborhood
After World War II, the city of Vienna began a process of accelerated recovery and development. The city’s growth and expansion led to the annexation of small villages in its vicinity. One of the villages annexed in 1892 was Grinzing, which is now considered part of the 19th district. Despite being part of the big city, Grinzing has retained the character and atmosphere of a small village. The single-family homes and abundant greenery are certainly a refreshing change from the urban landscape in the heart of Vienna. Furthermore, Grinzing is known for its wine taverns (in German, Heurigen), which offer an authentic Austrian experience and locally produced wine. One of the best places is Heuriger & Weingut Müller. The restaurant is built in a traditional wooden style, and you are sure to find high-quality schnitzel and good wine there.
You can get to Grinzing using tram number 38, which departs from the Schottentor station near the University of Vienna. Alternatively, you can take the U4 subway line (the green line) and get off at the last stop, called Heiligenstadt. From there, take bus line 38A to Grinzing.

2. Kahlenberg Mountain
Another experiential place within Grinzing is up on Kahlenberg mountain (more like a hill). From this spot, you can overlook all of Vienna, and on a clear day, you can even see as far as Bratislava. At the top of the hill, there is a nice café where you can enjoy coffee and cake while taking in the view. After going up to the summit by bus, you can leisurely walk down among the vineyards and green fields. Additionally, in the Kahlenberg area, there is an exciting ropes course that operates during the spring, summer, and autumn months (you can read more about the ropes course in the detailed article we prepared on Kahlenberg mountain).
The best way to get to Kahlenberg is by bus 38A. You can take the bus from the heart of Grinzing or from the Heiligenstadt U4 subway station. You can read more detailed information about the mountain and all the attractions in its vicinity in the article we prepared.
