Sweden Square (Schwedenplatz) is considered one of the central locations in Vienna. From this point, you can easily reach Vienna's Old Town (via Rotenturmstraße), walk to the beautiful Danube Canal, or explore the Jewish Quarter across the canal. Schwedenplatz is a lively place day and night. You can find historical sites, attractions, many good restaurants, excellent ice cream parlors, bars, and pubs here. Locals also refer to this area as the Bermuda Triangle.

  4. How to Get to Schwedenplatz by Public Transport?

1. What is the Bermuda Triangle?

The streets adjacent to Schwedenplatz, in the section between the square and the Old Town, are called the Bermuda Triangle. This area includes the Jewish streets Seitenstettengasse (where the center of Vienna’s Jewish community and the central synagogue are located) and Judengasse, and continues to Rabensteig and Ruprechtsplatz. Locals call the place the Bermuda Triangle because it’s very easy to get lost among the different bars, especially after having a bit too much to drink. The streets look quite similar, so it’s very easy to get confused, lose your way, and disappear from your friends waiting for you.

Before we detail the attractions and recommended places in this area, you should know that the Bermuda Triangle is actually one of Vienna’s oldest areas. In ancient times, this place was a military camp for the Roman Legion called Vindobona. With the city’s development, many Jews engaged in commerce and textiles settled in this area, which is why one of the streets is even called Judengasse (Jewish Street). In 1826, the city’s central synagogue began operating on Seitenstettengasse.

The fact that today the central synagogue and the center of the Jewish community are located right in the heart of a bustling entertainment and nightlife district is truly unique and uncommon. You probably won’t find such a thing in most ancient capital cities in Europe.

2. Nightlife in the Bermuda Triangle

If you’re looking for cheap, authentic local pubs, the Bermuda Triangle isn’t the place. Over the years, the area has become a popular tourist hotspot, and while the bars may look simple, drinks here are surprisingly expensive.

3. Attractions in the Bermuda Triangle Area

Of course, the Bermuda Triangle is famous for its bars, pubs, and clubs, but this area is also suitable for a visit during the day. There are several attractions located close to each other that are worth knowing about if you’re visiting the Bermuda Triangle during the day.

The Great Synagogue (Stadttempel)

This synagogue is the only one that remained standing after World War II. The synagogue building is somewhat hidden, and from the outside, the building looks completely ordinary, but inside there is a large and beautiful prayer hall and many rooms used by the synagogue and the Jewish community. Above the entrance door to the synagogue, there is an inscription in Hebrew: “Come into His gates with thanksgiving, into His courts with praise,” which helps identify its location (on days of prayers, you can also see police officers walking along the synagogue street). The synagogue is active, with Shabbat and holiday prayers, and of course, guided tours during the week.

You can read extended information about visiting the synagogue in the comprehensive article we prepared about the building. Additionally, you can read about 20 Jewish places in Vienna.

Jewish Square (Judenplatz)

Judenplatz is not far from the Great Synagogue. In the Middle Ages, this place was a center of Jewish life. Archaeological excavations at the site have found remnants of an ancient synagogue, which are displayed in the museum located in one of the buildings surrounding the square. In its center, there is a Holocaust memorial. Today, Austria’s Supreme Court is located in one of the buildings on the square. You can read extended information about visiting the Judenplatz Museum in the comprehensive article we prepared about 20 Jewish places in Vienna.

St. Rupert’s Church (Ruprechtskirche)

This church is considered the oldest in Vienna. According to researchers’ estimates, this church was built as early as the 8th century AD. It was built in Romanesque style and dedicated to Saint Rupert of Salzburg – the patron saint of Vienna’s salt merchants. The church housed the salt office, which supplied salt and supervised its quality. Over the years, the church was renovated, and parts of it were rebuilt after being damaged by fire and bombings during World War II.

Opening Hours: Every day except Saturday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. On Mondays and Wednesdays also from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. On Thursdays, open continuously from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Saturdays from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM.

Upper Market Square (Hoher Markt) – The Historic Anker Clock, Wedding Fountain and Roman Museum

Hoher Markt is one of Vienna’s oldest squares. Once surrounded by magnificent palaces, it was heavily damaged during World War II, and the original buildings were replaced with post-war constructions. One historic highlight that survived is the Art Nouveau clock from the early 20th century, adorned with historical figures and a special mechanism. Every hour, the figures move to music, with the 12:00 PM show being the most impressive.

At the center of the square stands the Wedding Fountain (Vermählungsbrunnen), designed by the renowned architect Johann Emanuel Fischer von Erlach and unveiled in 1732. Made primarily of marble and copper, the fountain depicts the wedding of Mary and Joseph. In the center are sculptures of Mary, Joseph, and the priest, surrounded by four angels.

Another notable attraction is the Roman Museum of Vienna, located just across the square. Archaeological excavations that began in the 19th century uncovered fascinating artifacts from the time when Roman legionaries and citizens from across the empire lived in the Vienna area. Today, the museum displays around 300 items from this period, along with simulations and animations that bring the life of the Roman camp and its surroundings to life.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Heart of the Old Town)

Vienna’s central church, also known as St. Stephen’s Church. It is located in the very heart of the Old Town and is considered one of the most important attractions. The church was built in the 12th century but was renovated and modified over the years. The church building is impressively beautiful and includes tall towers, a colorful tiled roof adorned with Austrian symbols, sculptures, and magnificent wall decorations. Inside the church, you can admire the large prayer hall adorned with marble columns, chandeliers, sculptures, and stone carvings. You can enter the entrance area for free and observe the inner hall, but if you want to explore the more interior parts of the church, you need to purchase admission tickets. You can also climb the church tower and observe the magnificent view of the Old Town.

Around the church, there are ancient and beautiful streets bustling with luxury shops, restaurants, and cafes. These streets are Graben, Kärntner Straße, and Kohlmarkt. The entire area is magnificent and very suitable for a coffee and cake stop. You can read detailed information about the Cathedral and all its attractions.

The Danube Canal

The Danube Canal (Donaukanal) flows leisurely through Vienna, right next to the Old Town center. The canal stretches for 17 kilometers, and along its banks, there are a variety of restaurants, bars, and interesting buildings. To reach the canal, you need to cross the Ring Road from Schwedenplatz and go down the stairs towards the canal. Read about the attractions on the Danube Canal.

The Jewish Street – Taborstraße

A short walk from the Schwedenplatz subway station, just beyond the bridge that crosses the Danube Canal, Taborstraße begins. This street is also known as the Jewish Street, and many Jewish families reside nearby. Furthermore, you can find several kosher restaurants, kosher supermarkets, a wine shop, and of course, the city’s central Chabad House. Don’t be surprised if you see many kippah-wearing individuals strolling happily down the street; it’s a common sight in Vienna. Read more about the Second District – Vienna’s Jewish Quarter.

4. How to Get to Schwedenplatz by Public Transport?

Subway lines U4 (green line) and U1 (red line) stop right at the square. You can also get there by tram using line 1 or 2. Get off at the Schwedenplatz station.

After exploring the area, you can continue to a nearby and truly wonderful area – The Prater amusement park. Read comprehensive and very detailed information about everything you can do in Prater Park in the extended article we prepared.
