The huge Nockberge Nature Reserve (Biosphärenpark Nockberge) covers an area of 480 square kilometers and is located mostly in the northern part of the state of Carinthia (part of it is also in the Salzburg region). Only about 11,500 residents live within the reserve, mainly in the towns of Bad Kleinkirchheim, Krems, Reichenau, and Radenthein. In the past, there were mines for minerals and precious metals here, but today most residents are engaged in agriculture and tourism. In 2012, the reserve became a UNESCO World Heritage site and is the largest reserve in all of Austria.

The nature reserve area is characterized by high mountains and numerous hills covered with vast carpets of grass and a variety of tree species. There are also small lakes and many streams flowing throughout the reserve. Many wild animals roam freely in the large open spaces. While walking on the trails between the mountains, you can see animals like deer, marmots, eagles, snakes, birds, salamanders, fish, and more. The local residents often take their herds of cows for walks on the mountain peaks, and it’s not surprising to see cows happily grazing along the hiking trails.

Hiking Trails in the Reserve
For nature and landscape lovers, there are a variety of beautiful hiking trails in the heart of the reserve suitable for all levels (not suitable for strollers, possible with a baby carrier). You can plan your hike using the area’s interactive trail map.
The Panoramic Road Through the Nature Reserve
One of the best ways to enjoy the rich and diverse nature of the reserve is by driving on the panoramic road that passes through the heart of the reserve. This road is called the Nockalmstrasse and it connects Krems (Krems in Kärnten) with Ebene Reichenau. The road stretches for 34 kilometers and is very winding with 52 bends along the way. The road passes between the mountain peaks, and its highest point is the Eisentalhöhe summit at an altitude of 2,042 meters above sea level.
Driving on the road is a great experience and is one of the most popular attractions in this area. Similar to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, there are also stopping points along this road. At the stops, there are places to rest, viewpoints, short hiking trails, and playgrounds for children.

In the eastern part of the large Nockberge Nature Reserve is a special adventure park called Heidi Alm. The park is located at an altitude of 1,805 meters above sea level and is based on the folk story of Heidi, Girl of the Alps. The park’s paths are also accessible to strollers. You can read more information in the article we prepared about the park.
Another particularly fun attraction is the Nocky Flitzer alpine coaster, also located in the eastern part of the reserve. Read more information about the alpine coaster.
South of the reserve is the town of Bad Kleinkirchheim, with two large and well-known spa complexes: the Römerbad Thermal Spa and the St. Kathrein Thermal Spa. Not far from there is an Alpine wildlife park with about 30 species of animals and also exhibits of taxidermy animals from around the world.
