The historic and preserved windmill is located in the small town of Podersdorf am See, which is right on the shores of Lake Neusiedl.
Due to the lack of large streams in the area, the residents had to generate power using wind energy. For this purpose, 7 windmills were built throughout the region. Six ancient windmills were destroyed or left in ruins, and only one windmill, built as early as the beginning of the 19th century, remains standing in the center of the small town. This mill has been owned by the Lentsch family since its construction around 1851.
During World War II, Allied forces suspected that the windmill housed a weapons cache and consequently blew up part of it, causing damage to the roof and the ancient “sails.” Extensive restoration work was required to return the mill to its original beauty.
This is how the windmill looked in the past — and it looks much the same today
The mill is open for visits between May and October, and guided tours for parents and children are held there. Through the guided tour, you can learn about the lives of the windmill workers and the operation of the ancient mill. Tours are held by prior arrangement.
