Gastein Valley (Gasteinertal) was settled as early as the Middle Ages, with small settlements established along its length. The inhabitants of the area primarily made a living from agriculture, gold mining, and the valley’s hot springs. The mineral and salt-rich springs quickly became the most popular in the entire region, and emperors of the empire would specially visit the area to visit the springs.
Today, the valley is a popular tourist destination in winter and summer. Ski lovers come to ski on the 250 kilometers of ski and snowboard slopes. In summer, many hikers come to enjoy the walking trails between the mountain peaks and the two indulgent spa resorts operating in the area.
The valley has three main spa towns, where you can find the best attractions. These towns are: Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein, and Dorfgastein. Each town is unique and incredibly picturesque.

The Main Towns in Gastein Valley
Gastein Valley has three main towns located a short drive from each other. On a trip to this valley, you can easily combine visits to all of them.

Bad Gastein
This spa town is located in the southern part of the valley. It sits at an elevation of 1,000 meters above sea level, nestled on the slopes of the high mountains. The town center is small and characterized by many old hotels situated directly on the mountain slopes.
The meaning of the word “Bad” in German is spa, which reflects its history as a famous spa destination. The town became particularly renowned for the healing tunnels discovered (Heilstollen) there. These tunnels were dug by miners and were found to have a high concentration of radon gas, which proved to be a component that helps improve health. Today, people from all over the world come to lie in the tunnel and breathe the radon-rich air.
Besides the healing tunnels, there are three other main attractions – the Bad Gastein waterfall in the heart of the town, Felsentherme Spa, and Stubnerkogel Peak, which features the Suspension Bridge, the Rock Path, and observation decks. We will elaborate on these attractions later in the article.
There’s no doubt that Bad Gastein is a popular accommodation destination in the valley. If you’re looking to stay here, you can find a list of recommended hotels and guesthouses for your stay on booking.com.
Bad Hofgastein
This spa town is located exactly in the center of the valley, south of Dorfgastein and north of Bad Gastein. This small town is a favorite destination, especially among Austrians themselves, mainly because it has a large ski resort and the huge Alpentherme spa. The town center is absolutely picturesque, with small, old streets flanked by luxurious hotels, restaurants, and cafes. Various performances are held in the town’s main square throughout the year.
In terms of hotels, Bad Hofgastein has the largest concentration of luxury hotels that also offer private spas with jacuzzi pools and saunas. You can see the recommended accommodations in the town on booking.com.
Near the town is Schlossalm peak, from which you can embark on beautiful hiking trails. Additionally, on this peak, you’ll find the “Rock Creatures” – these are uniquely shaped natural rock formations resembling various animals.
Dorfgastein
This town is located at the entrance to Gastein Valley and is popular mainly due to its nearby ski slopes. For many years, the town served as the seat of the Archbishop’s officials. The castle built there served as a defensive stronghold and a toll station for those wishing to pass through the valley.
Near the town is Fulseck peak, which features a lake known as the Mirror Lake (there’s a lake with the same name in the Schladming area). Around this beautiful lake, there are easy hiking trails suitable for children, as well as a playground with facilities like swings, slides, and more. Another attraction here is searching for crystals in the mountains. At the cable car station leading to the peak, you can rent a special hammer and go hunting for beautiful crystals.
For those interested in a quieter vacation, this town might be the perfect place to stay. There are several recommended hotels and guesthouses here.

Weather in the Valley
Although the most popular activities are visiting the indoor spa complexes, if you want to go hiking in nature or see the beautiful waterfalls, it’s a good idea to be prepared and updated on the weather. The weather in Austria, in general, can be fickle, so there’s no real way to rely on the weather before your arrival to estimate how it will be for you. It’s recommended to check the forecast on the morning of the day itself and be prepared for weather changes throughout the day. Especially if you are outdoors all day, there’s a high chance that the temperature will change (even significantly) throughout the day.
Generally, the best months for a summer trip are July and August. During these months, temperatures are comfortable – around 20 degrees Celsius during the day. The warmest month is August, with temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius throughout the day. It’s important to remember that the towns in the valley are relatively high up, so temperatures drop at night (sometimes significantly), and therefore, you’ll need to bring warmer clothing if necessary.
The rainiest months are June, July, and August. In August, the most rain falls, with an average of about 19 rainy days throughout the month.
Winter is characterized by low temperatures. In the winter months, the temperature ranges from minus five to 5 degrees Celsius throughout the day. The coldest month is January, and the driest month is February.
When preparing for a trip to Gastein Valley (or any other part of Austria), it’s advisable to dress in layers, like an onion. Thin layers close to the body, with warmer clothing on top. It’s good to bring outerwear that is rain and windproof. It’s always a good idea to take an umbrella and keep it in your bag or car because even sunny days can turn rainy within a few hours.
One last thing, the temperatures within the valley do not reflect the temperatures on the mountain peaks. If you plan to go to high places, you should consider that the temperatures will be lower and that there will most likely be a cold wind.
You can check the updated forecast here.
Recommended Attractions in the Valley
Throughout the valley, there are several recommended attractions. There are two large spa complexes, impressive waterfalls, a clear and refreshing lake, observation decks from mountain peaks, hiking trails, and more. We have compiled the most recommended activities here.

One of the largest and best spa complexes in the region is located right in the center of Bad Hofgastein. The huge spa includes 4 indulgent areas. Additionally, there is an area for beauty treatments and massages, a sports center with an equipped gym, a restaurant, and a drinks bar. Bad Gastein Waterfall
The magnificent waterfall in the heart of the town is an extraordinary sight. The Suspension Bridge on Stubnerkogel Peak (Hängebrücke Stubnerkogel)
The suspension bridge is located near the upper cable car station on Stubnerkogel peak. The narrow bridge was built at a height of 28 meters in the air and is 140 meters long. The bridge is suspended on a metal cable and is made of a metal mesh. It has handrails on both sides. The bridge can withstand winds of up to 200 km/h, so it is strong, but you will, of course, feel it move in the wind. Nevertheless, those who are afraid of heights should avoid going on the suspension bridge. Those who do cross to the other side of the bridge can enjoy magnificent views of the entire mountainous area with a deep abyss beneath them.
Glocknerblick Observation Deck (Aussichtplattform Glocknerblick)
At the end of the suspension bridge, there is a beautiful observation deck that offers a 360-degree view of the entire area. This observation deck is located right at the edge of the cliff but does not protrude beyond it. Those who do not wish to cross the suspension bridge can reach it by a short walk from the Stubnerkogel mountain cable car station.
The New Talblick Observation Deck (Talblick Aussichtsplattform)
In 2018, another observation deck was built on Stubnerkogel peak. Unlike the observation deck mentioned earlier, this one protrudes beyond the edge of the cliff, allowing you to look directly into the deep abyss. It was built in the same style as the “Stairs to Nowhere” in the Styria region.
The Rock Path (Felsenweg)
This path is made of metal and is attached to the side of the cliff. The path is about 200 meters long, leading to another observation deck at its end.
Gold Panning
Gastein Valley was known not only for its hot springs but also for the gold found there. Various mines operated in the valley for many years.
