Lamprecht’s Cave | Europe’s Deepest Subterranean Wonder

Step away from the alpine trails and discover Lamprecht’s Cave, a massive subterranean network in the Salzburger Saalachtal. From family-friendly underground walks to world-record-breaking depths, here is everything you need to plan your visit.

When planning a trip through the Salzburg region, outdoor itineraries usually focus on alpine hiking trails or mountain lakes. However, stepping away from the surface reveals an entirely different landscape underground. Located in the Salzburger Saalachtal between Lofer and Weißbach, Lamprecht’s Cave (Lamprechtshöhle) stands out as one of the most extensive cave systems in Europe.

While the public show cave covers a safe, well-lit 700-meter stretch, the rest of the 60+ kilometer system plunges to a vertical depth of 1,735 meters, ranking it among the deepest cave networks in the world. It also holds the world record as the largest through-cave system, connecting upper and lower alpine entrances. Beyond the tourist path, the wild interior features underground rivers, waterfalls, and climbing routes, and experienced visitors can even book guided adventure tours into these deeper research areas for a true caving expedition.

This is what Lamprecht’s Cave looks like

What Makes Lamprecht’s Cave Unique?

With a total surveyed length of over 51 kilometers, Lamprecht’s Cave is a massive subterranean network. A high-altitude entrance discovered by cavers established it as a through-cave system.

For the average visitor, a designated and well-secured path leads roughly 700 meters into the mountain. Walking through the cavern involves navigating around 392 steps and overcoming a vertical height difference of 70 meters. The route culminates at a large viewing platform, offering clear sightlines of the illuminated rock formations, rushing water channels, and the sheer scale of the cavern walls.

Is Lamprecht’s Cave Family-Friendly?

Yes, Lamprecht’s Cave is well-suited for families, with a few practical considerations:

  • Accessibility: The tourist-accessible path consists of solid staircases and handrails, making it manageable for children who are comfortable walking on uneven surfaces.
  • Strollers and Toddlers: Because of the numerous steps and staircases, strollers cannot be brought inside. Very small children or toddlers will need to be carried by hand or in a carrier.
  • Duration: The walk takes about one hour round trip, which fits easily into a half-day itinerary without exhausting younger travelers.
  • Temperature Warning: Regardless of how warm it is outside, the internal temperature of the cave remains steady at around 4°C to 6°C (39°F to 43°F) year-round. Bringing jackets, long pants, and sturdy closed-toe shoes is essential for everyone.

Additional Essential Information for Your Visit

Opening Hours:

The cave is generally open daily from May through October from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM, and switches to weekend-only hours during the winter months.

Tickets:

  • Adults: €11
  • Child (4-15 years): €7
  • Child (0-3 years): Free
  • Salzburger Saalachtal Card or the SalzburgerLand Card: Free Entry
  • Combined tickets are also available if you plan to visit the nearby Vorderkaser Gorge and Seisenberg Gorge.

How to Get to Lamprecht’s Cave?

The site is located directly off the B311 road, with a paid parking lot available at the entrance. Public bus line 260 stops right in front of the cave complex, making it accessible via regional public transit.

In case you get hungry, there is a local inn operates right at the cave entrance, serving regional food, hot drinks, and snacks.
