The natural wonders of the Saalachtal valley (in German, Saalachtaler Naturgewalten) are located around the village of Weißbach, at the foot of the Lofer and Leogang mountains, about a 20-minute drive from Zell am See. In this area, persistent water has carved narrow passages between the massive rocks over thousands of years, creating impressively beautiful gorges. In addition to the gorges, the area is home to a giant cave, one of the largest in all of Europe.
In the natural world of the Saalachtal valley, you can see the following places:
- Seisenberg Gorge (Seisenbergklamm)
- Vorderkaser Gorge (Vorderkaserklamm)
- Lamprecht’s Cave (Lamprechtshöhle)
Seisenberg Gorge
In 1831, a 600-meter-long wooden path was built at a depth of 50 meters inside the gorge. Today, you can easily hike it. The walk through the gorge takes only about an hour and is beautifully maintained. It’s a great place to marvel at the power of nature. The trail is suitable for families. Read more extensive information about the Seisenberg Gorge.
Vorderkaser Gorge (Vorderkaserklamm)
The second gorge in the wonderful natural world of the Saalbach Valley is located between the villages of St. Martin and Weißbach. This gorge was also formed over tens of thousands of years as a result of the persistent flow of the Ödenbach stream. Each year, the water “erodes” about 6 millimeters from the rocks, so it took a very long time to create the 400-meter-long and 80-meter-deep gorge. In its lower part, it narrows to a width of only 80 centimeters. Along the trail, there are 51 bridges on the rock face and about 373 steps.
A very nice addition to a visit to this gorge are the natural swimming pools located nearby. There are 3 refreshing pools surrounded by tables and benches. An ideal place for a picnic in nature.
