The Strudel Show takes place at the Royal Bakery within the Schönbrunn Palace complex, in Vienna’s 13th district, slightly outside the city center. For those who don’t know, Schönbrunn Palace is considered one of Austria’s most popular attractions and is definitely worth a visit when you come to Vienna. Surrounding the palace is a vast complex that includes impressive gardens, the world’s oldest zoo, and several wonderful attractions for the whole family.
Near the palace building, not far from the U4 Schönbrunn subway station, you’ll find a renowned café and confectionery. The royal confectionery, called Gerstner K. u. K. Hofzuckerbäcker, began offering entertaining strudel demonstrations that also include tastings of this wonderful treat. Some claim that the strudel served there is undoubtedly one of the most delicious and authentic in Vienna.
The Viennese Strudel Show
To enrich your visit, the confectionery offers an entertaining and educational strudel preparation show. The show takes place in a dedicated kitchen. The head confectioner or one of their professional assistants conducts the show, explaining the dough preparation, the perfect apple filling according to the Viennese recipe, and the most important secrets to the most delicious strudel.
Viennese apple strudel is made in a specific way, and the Viennese recipe differs slightly from other strudel recipes. You’ll receive the original recipe as part of your participation in the show, so you can try to make it yourself after returning home from Vienna. At the end of the show, you can, of course, taste the famous strudel. Although the revamped Strudel Show at the Royal Confectionery only started in May 2024, there are already many positive reviews about it, and travelers and locals alike are coming to enjoy this wonderful Viennese experience!

What to Do Before or After the Strudel Show?
The show itself is short, so after 20-30 minutes, you’ll be out. Fortunately, the Schönbrunn Palace complex is vast and includes a variety of other activities. If you haven’t already taken a tour of Schönbrunn Palace itself, it’s worth going inside and being impressed by its magnificent beauty. Alternatively, you can wander through the gardens, climb Gloriette Hill and overlook the city from there, or visit the wonderful zoo located near the palace. If you’ve explored the palace thoroughly and feel like experiencing the neighborhood it’s in, it’s worth stepping out and strolling through the 13th district. This is one of the districts where the city’s wealthy residents live, and a leisurely walk there will allow you to admire the villas of affluent Viennese.
Afterward, you can return to the city by subway on Line U4 to Schwedenplatz, or stop at the Naschmarkt beforehand. Another option is to delve deeper into the 13th district and visit one of the city’s beautiful, albeit less touristy, parks. This park is called Lainzer Tiergarten. In spring, you can spot wild boars roaming freely in the park, as well as deer and gazelles.
