General Information about the Museum
The Vienna Museum of Technology, or the Technical Museum (Technisches Museum Wien), is one of the oldest museums in Vienna. It was founded during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph and opened to visitors as early as 1918. The museum building is a short walk from the Schönbrunn Palace complex in Vienna’s 13th district and includes numerous exhibitions spread over an area of 22,000 square meters.
The exhibits in the museum are unique and cover a variety of technological topics. The displays deal with subjects such as nature, astronomy, physics, mining, consumer goods, information and communication technologies, musical instruments, transportation, and more.
In the various displays, you can see, for example, the different machines that were used in the last few centuries in the many mines scattered throughout Austria. Another exhibition presents the world of electricity, with its centerpiece being a singing Tesla coil. The special coil will play various melodies for you, such as “The Blue Danube” by Johann Strauss II or “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple.

Another main exhibition deals with the world of Austrian railways, where you can see up close old locomotives and carriages that were in operation in Austria over 100 years ago. In another part of the museum, there is a permanent exhibition on women in science, focusing on the discoveries and developments of important women in the scientific world.
The museum has a play corner for young children with a variety of fun installations. Among them is a large floor piano that you can jump and play on.
There is no doubt, then, that the museum is suitable for adults and children alike. Even if you are not crazy about technology, you are sure to find something interesting that you didn’t know before. There are always new temporary exhibitions, so you can visit the museum several times and still learn something new.
