The Salzburg Zoo is somewhat reminiscent of the Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna due to its age and proximity to a magnificent palace. As early as the 15th century, this site was home to a wildlife park that served the enjoyment of the ruling archbishops of the region. In the 17th century, when the impressive Hellbrunn Palace was built, the zoo was also established next to it. For this reason, the zoo was formerly called the Hellbrunn Palace Zoo (Tiergarten Hellbrunn). Today, it is known as the Salzburg City Zoo and is a very popular attraction for parents and children alike.
The Salzburg Zoo is quite large, covering an area of 14 hectares. The animal habitats are spacious, giving them the room they need. Additionally, the habitats are designed according to the type of animals they house to provide them with a sense of a natural and proper living environment.
The zoo is home to 1,200 animals from 140 different species from various regions around the world. The habitats are divided by continent. In the African section, you can see lions, leopards, monkeys, rhinos, and other savanna animals. In the Eurasia section, you can see red pandas, ibexes, camels, brown bears, and more. The Americas section features sloths, tapirs, and others. Animals from Australia, such as the wallaby, are also found in the zoo.
Besides observing the various animals, you can also pet and feed cute animals in the zoo’s petting corner. Another attraction at the zoo is called the Night Zoo. This is an opportunity to visit the zoo after dark until 10:00 PM! (On Fridays and Saturdays in August and September only). Throughout the park, there are restaurants and kiosks where you can buy food and snacks during your visit.
