The meaning of the word Baden in German is "to bathe" or "pools." The town of Baden is a lovely spa town located about 25 kilometers south of Vienna. The town is situated next to the Schwechat River and in the heart of the region known as the Vienna Woods (Wienerwald). The town gets its name from the 13 hot springs found there.

The Story of Baden

The town of Baden was a spa town as early as the Roman period, and its ancient name is Thermae Pannonicae (the Pannonian Springs). For many years, the place was a prosperous center despite repeated attacks by various invaders who came to the area, such as the Hungarians and the Turks.

A large fire that broke out in the town in 1812 destroyed it almost completely, but it was restored and rebuilt in the Biedermeier style (like the style of the Great Synagogue in Vienna). At the beginning of the 19th century, Baden was connected to Vienna by new railway lines. This infrastructure development led to a boom and prosperity in Baden as a result of the arrival of many Viennese to the town. Even members of the Habsburg family built themselves beautiful villas in the Baden area. A theater, a casino, and a military hospital were also built. The famous composer Beethoven also visited Baden at times, and his residence is now a tourist attraction in the town.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Baden was the most popular tourist destination among the Viennese and residents of the region. About 20,000 people would come each year to relax and unwind in the hot springs (at that time, only about 10,000 people lived in the town).

The Jewish Community in Baden

Many Jews came to settle in Baden as early as the Middle Ages, but they were not granted rights until 1861. In that year, Jews were permitted to live permanently in the town, and in the following years, the Jewish community of Baden was founded. This community was the largest in Lower Austria. In the period before World War II, about 2,400 Jews lived in Baden, and community life was vibrant. There were a variety of Jewish places in the town: synagogues, an orphanage, a mikvah (ritual bath), kosher shops, a Chevra Kadisha (burial society), and more.

Most of the Baden community was destroyed in the Holocaust. Only about 30 people survived, and the thriving community life never returned to its former state. Today, there is one central synagogue where prayers are held on holidays and sometimes on Saturdays. The community consists of a few dozen members. You can read more information on the website of the Jewish Community of Baden.

3 Historical Places near Baden

If you have already seen all the important places in Baden, you can drive a short distance to see several interesting historical sites.

1. The Ruins of Rauhenstein Castle (Burgruine Rauhenstein)

A short distance from the center of Baden are the mostly ruined remains of a castle built in the 12th century. This castle was one of the largest in the Vienna area. In the 18th century, the castle was abandoned and has stood ruined and empty ever since. You can reach the castle via a marked path. The walk to the castle takes about 10 minutes, and it is advisable to have good walking shoes.

Another option is to continue from the castle on the green hiking trail that passes through the forest. At the end of the green trail, you reach a road, and after crossing it, you continue on the blue trail that leads to a beautiful viewpoint over the Helenental valley. From the viewpoint, continue towards the Cholerakapelle, an ancient building at the edge of the forest. From this building, there is a paved path back to the starting point. The circular route is of easy difficulty and takes between two and two and a half hours.

If you arrive by car, you can park in the free parking lot behind the nearby Sacher Hotel. From the parking lot, you have to walk back towards the road and cross it at the traffic light. After crossing, there is a small street that leads to the beginning of the trail to the castle.

Please note: Due to maintenance work, the castle is closed to visitors until further notice. It can still be clearly seen from the road.

2. The Ruins of Rauheneck Castle (Burgruine Rauheneck)

About 2.5 kilometers from Baden is another castle that was also built in the 12th century. The castle is on a hill 384 meters above sea level. The castle withstood many attacks and was destroyed several times, but to this day it has not been restored. You can walk up the hill to the castle and enjoy a spectacular view of the entire area. One of the parts of the castle that survived is a 25-meter-high watchtower. You can climb to the top and look out over the area. The climb to the castle is easy and suitable for everyone.
