Before we dive into the details of the recommended restaurants, here’s some general information about restaurants in Vienna, tipping culture, and the necessity of booking in advance.
Intro to Viennese Restaurants
Are Restaurants in Vienna Expensive?
Vienna isn’t cheap, but generally, restaurants will probably cost you less than in your home country. For a glass of beer, you can expect to pay around €5, and for a main course, usually between €18-€30. Of course, in more touristy or luxurious places, dishes will be more expensive accordingly. Keep in mind that portion sizes are generally smaller than in many other countries. This isn’t necessarily because they’re stingy with food; it’s simply that the eating culture in Austria and the entire region is more moderate, and locals don’t eat huge quantities (don’t worry, at the end of the list, there’s a restaurant perfect for anyone with a huge appetite!).
Is It Obligatory to Leave a Tip in Restaurants?
Basically, there’s no obligation to leave tips, and no one will complain if you don’t leave anything. It’s customary to round up or leave about a 10% tip if you enjoyed your meal. Usually, it’s fine to pay the required amount and then leave the tip in cash afterward.
Is It Mandatory to Book a Table in Advance?
Mostly no. During tourist seasons and for famous restaurants like Figlmüller or Cafe Landtmann, it’s advisable to book in advance to avoid long queues at the entrance. In general, we recommend booking a table for restaurants located in District 1, which is the center of Vienna, especially if you plan to go there in the evening.
And now, let’s get to the main point:
