In the southwestern part of Lower Austria, within the Mostviertel region, lies an impressively beautiful nature reserve: The Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park. At the heart of the reserve is the striking Mount Ötscher, which rises to a height of 1,893 meters above sea level. For lovers of landscapes and nature, this is a wonderful place for a day trip or even several days among mountains, lakes, and rivers. The most famous route in the reserve is known as “The Grand Canyon of Austria.” It is an organized and beautiful trail that includes walking through a large natural canyon, numerous waterfalls, spots for swimming in nature, and more! If you are traveling by car, it is well worth driving to explore this nature reserve.
Ötschergräben
The Ötschergräben is referred to by Austrians as the “Grand Canyon of Austria,” and for good reason. This area is an expansive system of natural canyons formed by the powerful flow of the Ötscherbach River. Wooded mountains rise on both sides of the canyon, while the impressive summit of Mount Ötscher towers at its end.
The trail passing through the canyon is wonderfully organized and features numerous waterfalls, a rushing river, and magnificent mountain scenery. At the edge of the canyon lies the “Fjord” of Lower Austria, the large reservoir known as Erlaufklause.

The Hiking Trail in Austria’s Grand Canyon
The adventure begins in the charming town of Wienerbruck, right at the nature reserve’s visitor center. After paying a small, symbolic entrance fee, you slip out the back door and step directly onto the trail.
The first stretch takes you past the Wienerbruck reservoir, home to the oldest dam in Austria. Don’t be discouraged if these first minutes feel underwhelming; the water flow here can be weak, sometimes resembling a quiet swamp rather than a rushing river. Stay the course, because the landscape soon transforms into something spectacular.
As you follow the forested path toward the Lassingfall, the atmosphere begins to shift. At the top of the waterfall, you’ll discover a hidden swimming spot that feels magical on a hot summer day. Take a dip in the cool water before continuing your descent toward the canyon floor. Pause at the main observation point, where you can admire the Lassingfall in all its 160-meter glory as it tumbles between steep mountain slopes.
At the base, you’ll encounter a piece of living history: an operational power station built to fuel the Mariazellerbahn, the famous train running from St. Pölten to Mariazell. After exploring the station, cross an old wooden bridge into the canyon. This is the most dramatic part of the trek, with narrow walkways bolted into the mountainside. If traveling with children, pay close attention here. While the walk along the Ötscherbach River isn’t overly grueling, expect some steep climbs.
The canyon eventually leads to the Ötscher-Hias refreshment station, a welcome sight for hikers. From there, the final ascent begins, returning you to the quiet forest.
